purposes such as trade, exploration, migration, pilgrimage, and cultural exchange. People traveled for economic, religious, or educational reasons, seeking new lands, resources, or spiritual experiences.

Invention of the Wheel: The invention of the wheel revolutionized travel and transportation. It allowed for the development of carts, chariots, and later, carriages, making it easier for people to travel longer distances and transport goods.

 

Contribution of Thomas Cook:

Thomas Cook, a British entrepreneur, is often credited as the pioneer of modern tourism. In 1841, he organized the first commercial tour, offering rail travel and accommodations for a group of temperance campaigners. This marked the beginning of organized tourism, leading to the establishment of travel agencies and package tours.

Today’s Scenario: Tourism has grown into a massive industry with a significant impact on economies, cultures, and environments worldwide. It has become more accessible and diverse, offering a wide range of destinations, experiences, and services to cater to different traveler preferences.

Definition of Tourism as Stated by U.N.W.T.O. : The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) defines tourism as “the activities of persons traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for leisure, business, or other purposes.”
